Sculpture by the Sea returns to the Bondi Beach to Tamarama Beach coastal walk as the world’s largest free to the public sculpture exhibition. See the spectacular coastal walk transformed into a 2km long sculpture park over three weeks featuring 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world.

Light & Gale is a weather-responsive installation that captures the full forces of Bondi’s dynamic breeze. Positioned on the exposed coastal headland and taking the form of two site-specific “windsocks”, these kaleidoscopic patchworks will articulate the wind’s invisible forces and act as a marker for direction and speed. Rotating on a 360 degree pivot point, the windsock will continually shift to face the direction of the wind, harnessing the all too familiar force as it breathes in the sea air.

The two windsocks will be designed to capture different strength of winds. “Light”, a simple tubular structure with flat geometric patterning, will hang in full form with no winds and take flight in the slightest breeze. “Gale”, a more complex design, will appear slack in the light wind but will become a multifaceted polyhedron as the wind strengthens, rising like a kite overhead.

Made almost entirely from recycled fabric, this installation strives to capture the public’s attention with its wind-filled stalactites and gelato-colours. But underpinning its energy is a darker message about the throwaway culture of our time; as we discard and disengage more and more, the veracity of weather events continues to increase.
